Customize COMB0004 robot
« on: April 14, 2012, 09:28:36 pm »
Dear DFRobot team,

I am a student, major in Computer science and interested in robotics field.
I really want to have a robot to do research in autonomous robot.

I found your robot kit COMB0004 (http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=37_69&product_id=570) seem suitable for me and want to have one.

But I do have some technical concerns, so I really want you give some advice about it: I want to build a robot that connect directly to a smart phone (iOS or Android is both ok), via cable should be the best, for fast signal sending). The phone will be mounted on the robot to control it. Because I want to use processing power of the phone to run artificial intelligence/computer vision algorithms to give the robot intelligence and autonomous capabiliity. Since I do not have any background in Electrical Engineering/Mechanical E, I really don't know how to do this. Could you give me detail advice: what should I buy, and how to build it? I really appreciate.

Thanks for your attention!

Sincerely,

Anh Nguyen

Hi Anh,

You will need a regular Arduino and a USB Host Shield to interface the phone with your Arduino. This should be enough to get you started. You can purchase more sensors as you discover what your needs are.  I'm not sure what other goals you might have in mind. But you will need to program your phone and the Arduino to interact with each other. I recommend an Android phone to start since it is much faster and easier to stat with.

Happy Hacking!

Thank for your answer!

As I said, my goal is simple: I use my Android phone, place it on the robot, connect the phone and the robot with cable. The phone will receive data from sensors and camera to make decision (control the robot's actions)

So here are the things I should buy:

1.  Robot kit COMB0004 (http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=37_69&product_id=570)
2. USB Host Shield (http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&filter_name=usb%20host&product_id=498)

3. A regular Arduino???

I am little bit confused about the 3rd one. Could you be more specific and add link to the product for me.
As I said, I have no experience in hardware, plz guide me through this. I really appreciate your support.
Thanks!
