What component do I need for this?

Hi all,

I'm sorry that the topic title is not really explanatory, but I really am a newbie in this electronics area and don't know how to achieve something like this:

The two rectangular pieces would be some type of copper platter, which would be glued to a door. As long as they are touching (door is closed), the data cable would send a signal over the data cable, and if they don't touch, no signal is send.. Of course, the three lines labeled power, ground and data are the cables that should come from this.

I have been looking on a dutch electronics website (Conrad) and the robotshop.com website, but I just don't know how something like this is called. Can anyone here help me out?

Thanks in advance!

You only need 2 wires. Vcc(+) and GND (-)

A magnetic switcher should be able to detect on/off without even contact. Does your application simply detect on/off status of a door?

That does indeed look like what I need. It should only register on/off, yes. I'll look into this further. Thanks!

You could make a custom PCB with large enough pads and use 3 pogo pins.

What is the goal of your project? Do you need to transmit data? or only open/close status?

I'm not sure if that would be something I need.. I don't understand it really. It should be just two pieces that, if they touch (open/close), sends a signal over the line.

The starting goal is just to register whether a door is open or closed, and when open, how long it has been open. It's a little school project, using a arduino board to talk from/to the computer.
