External power is definitely needed! I was more concerned about the voltage level on the serial connection. I ended up plugging it in to the DUE, and it it seems that it uses the correct output voltage based on the IOREF pin [5V on most Arduino's, but 3.3V on the DUE] --- good news! msteinhoff43
