I want to use my battery (nimh 4.8 volt total) and plug it into the motor shield external supply power port.

I plug my battery to the motor shield's port for external power supply. The dc motor works but other components won't work unless I plug the usb from my laptop to the arduino's usb port. (The other components control how the DC motor works, goes forward, backward, etc)

The battery works supplying more current to the DC motor, because it goes faster when I plug the battery while getting power from my laptop via arduino's usb port.

I suspect I got the power supply connection wrong so that the arduino doesn't get any power when the power supply is only the external power supply.

Possible solution :

1. In the motor shield's manual, it says : "make sure that both the external power supply and the Arduino share the same GND ground."

What does it mean? does it mean I have to connect the arduino's ground pin to the negative port of the motor shield's external power supply?

2. Change the power jumper. From the first picture above (the jumper's position is at the right bottom, above the external power supply port), I put the jumper on Vin and PWRIN.

I HAVE changed the jumper to the PWRIN ONLY, but it won't turn on.

3. Connect another external power supply to the arduino.

I think my battery is enough. It's NiMH 1300 mAh 4.8 V.
