DFPlayer Standalone Autoplayer

I just received my first DFplayer. I want to build a standalone player that automatically starts playing one single file when AC is switched on.
I have connected and set up the device the following
3 AA batteries (4,5V in total) to VCC/Ground
1 set of ear buds to DAC_R/L
1 8GB SD card, formatted in FAT under OS X with 1 mp3 on it named "0001.mp3"
To test the device I tried the I/O mode:
IO2 pin to ground.
The LED would turn on blue but there is no sound coming from the earbuds.
Does anyone have an idea why i doesn't work?
And further on, which way would I make the DFplayer an autoplayer? (33K resistance to the ADKey_1 pin?)
