DRI0023 Stepper motor shield(DRV8825) with encoder?

I would like to ask if it is possible to allow the encoder to determine the position of the stepper motor using the DRI0023 shield. I intend to use gray code to program the motor to stop and turn as I want or as the condition requires. Most probably I would be using NEMA 11 and NEMA 17 Stepper motor.
