Someone on GitHub clocked this sensor at about 4 Hz in practice. If you're polling faster than ~250 ms you're probably reading stale or invalid frames.
The wiki also mentions rough or dark surfaces can throw it off. Box beams are tricky — try a white paper target at the same distance. If the paper reads fine, it's the surface.
