IO Expansion and WPM

I have the Wireless Programming Module with the IO Expansioin sheild. The documentation is unclear about an external power source. Can I connect 9v to the Expansion Sheid Vin? Will it go through the regulator like the Arduino does?

Yes, once I made a Serial port communication with these modules.
Two switches are turned off. And then, they works very well.
The Led will be blinking at the same time, when you send some data to another one.
And Serial port and modules should be set to the same baud rate.
But the effective distance is only 20 meters.

Question 2. If I don't set the program enable switch on will this behave as normal RX TX serial communication. I mean can I use it for remote control from my PC.
Are the two switches just replacements for jumpers?
Maybe I need to learn more about this.
I want to use it for both programming and for serial communication in Processing as well. You probably can't give a short answer, but could you point me in the right direction.

Yes, the "VIN" on the expansion shield is directly connect with the "VIN" on arduino board.
So they both go through the regulator.
It is fine.
