I am wondering if there is an option to upgrade the firmware on the module, or if there is a hidden set of commands that could be nice to know.

Can you send us a picture of your hardware and the gadgeteer code you are using?
Let us try to repeat your process see if we can get the sound to improve. Did you manage to get rid of the ripples at lower frequencies?
