Introduction

Arduino Portenta C33 is a cost‑optimized industrial-grade development board within the Arduino Portenta ecosystem, designed to deliver powerful real‑time processing and secure connectivity for modern embedded systems. Built around a Renesas ARM® Cortex®‑M33 microcontroller running up to 200 MHz, this compact IoT controller combines high computational capability with integrated Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth® Low Energy communication. Support for MicroPython and other high‑level programming environments accelerates firmware development, while compatibility with existing Portenta and MKR form factors simplifies system integration. Such architecture makes the hardware platform well suited for connected devices, edge data processing, and scalable industrial IoT deployments.

High‑Performance Renesas Cortex‑M33 Architecture

This embedded controller board integrates the Renesas R7FA6M5BH2CBG ARM® Cortex®‑M33 processor operating at up to 200 MHz, delivering strong real‑time processing capability for edge computing tasks. With 512 KB SRAM, 2 MB onboard Flash, and an additional 16 MB QSPI Flash, the computing platform supports complex firmware, machine learning inference, and advanced data processing pipelines. Built‑in Arm TrustZone® technology and a Secure Crypto Engine further enhance reliability and security for professional embedded and industrial automation projects.

Integrated Wireless Connectivity for IoT Systems

This wireless IoT development board combines Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth® Low Energy connectivity with a 100 Mbit Ethernet PHY interface, enabling flexible networking architectures for industrial monitoring and connected infrastructure. Such connectivity allows edge devices to transmit telemetry, interact with cloud dashboards, or coordinate with other smart nodes across distributed systems. Reliable wireless communication makes the hardware platform suitable for remote control, fleet management, environmental monitoring, and smart facility management solutions.

Secure Hardware and OTA Firmware Management

An NXP® SE050C2 secure element provides industrial‑grade hardware security for authentication, encryption, and secure credential storage. Combined with Arm TrustZone® isolation, this secure microcontroller platform protects device identity and sensitive data in connected environments. Support for over‑the‑air firmware updates through Arduino IoT Cloud or third‑party services enables safe remote maintenance, ensuring long‑term deployment stability for IoT infrastructure, field monitoring equipment, and distributed automation networks.

Industrial Integration and Flexible Development

This compact Portenta‑compatible computing module includes castellated pins for automated assembly lines and robust PCB integration, making the hardware suitable for scalable product manufacturing. Extensive software libraries and ready‑to‑run sketches accelerate prototyping, while support for MicroPython simplifies rapid firmware iteration. Compatibility with Portenta and MKR expansion ecosystems further expands connectivity options, enabling developers to build advanced edge devices with sensors, gateways, and control interfaces.
