Introduction

The BOSON Coral Reef Kit is a hands-on STEM educational kit designed to explore the fragile balance of marine ecosystems and the phenomenon of coral bleaching. It operates by integrating a waterproof temperature sensor with a micro:bit or UNIHIKER K10 microcontroller to monitor underwater conditions in real-time. Based on the thermal data, students simulate how environmental changes impact coral health, making the invisible effects of climate change tangible. Key features include a project-based approach to life below water through UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a beginner-friendly design with a teacher-ready curriculum, and versatile platform compatibility. This classroom-ready kit is ideal for marine science education, STEM workshops, and environmental awareness programs for students aged 8 and up.

Note: This kit requires a UNIHIKER K10 or micro:bit, which are sold separately. An all-in-one bundle with the UNIHIKER K10 board is also available.

Project-Based Learning for Climate Action

This STEM coding kit provides a scenario-based, immersive learning experience centered on UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. Students are tasked with building a coral reef model to simulate the transition from vibrant color to bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures. This approach transforms complex biological and climatic concepts into a physical project, helping students understand the urgency of marine conservation. This educational tool addresses the real-world problem of global warming, encouraging students to think critically about how technology can help monitor and protect biodiversity.

Beginner-Friendly and Curriculum-Ready

Designed for absolute beginners, this ecosystem kit features a highly visual, step-by-step curriculum that ensures all students can follow along and build confidence. The included lesson plans are aligned with NGSS and CSTA standards, providing a professional framework for educators to teach ecosystem dynamics and data collection. The use of colorful, Lego-compatible BOSON modules and drag-and-drop programming lowers the barrier to entry for electronics, allowing students to focus on creative problem-solving and environmental storytelling.

Hands-On Sensor Technology and Coding

At the core of the learning experience is the interaction with professional-grade hardware. Students learn to connect and program a Boson waterproof temperature sensor to gather precise environmental data from aquatic models. Students then write code to process this data, perhaps triggering visual alerts when temperatures exceed safe thresholds for coral survival. This process is fundamental to developing computational thinking, as students learn to translate environmental variables into digital logic and actionable insights.

Versatile Compatibility and Extensibility

The BOSON Coral Reef Kit offers broad compatibility, supporting both the micro:bit and the powerful UNIHIKER K10 microcontrollers. This flexibility allows this marine kit to be integrated into various existing classroom technology ecosystems. As part of the modular BOSON platform, this marine kit is also fully extensible. Students can expand marine research stations with additional sensors—such as light or pH sensors—allowing the projects to evolve from simple temperature monitors to comprehensive oceanographic research tools.
