WiFi Bee V1.0 is a compact XBee‑footprint wireless networking module designed to transition existing 802.15.4‑based designs into standard TCP/IP Wi‑Fi connectivity with minimal hardware changes. Built around the RN‑XV platform from Roving Networks, this Wi‑Fi communication module fits directly into common XBee sockets, allowing embedded systems originally designed for wireless serial links to join conventional 802.11 b/g networks. Integrated networking firmware, onboard TCP/IP stack, and UART communication enable straightforward wireless data transmission for robotics, sensor nodes, and IoT prototypes without requiring a full hardware redesign.
Note: In order to configure this module, an adapter or XBee shield is required to communicate with the module before deploying it in other hardware systems. Compatible configuration hardware includes the Xbee USB adapter (FTDI).
XBee-Compatible Wi‑Fi Networking Upgrade
Designed with the widely used 802.15.4 XBee footprint, this wireless networking module can replace traditional XBee radios in compatible sockets while adding full Wi‑Fi connectivity. Migration from mesh or serial wireless architectures to TCP/IP infrastructure becomes significantly easier since existing hardware layouts remain unchanged. The embedded radio supports 802.11 b/g communication and configurable transmit power from 0 dBm to 12 dBm, enabling flexible wireless performance for embedded networking, distributed sensor systems, and connected device prototypes.
Integrated TCP/IP Stack and Embedded Processing
Built on the RN‑171 Wi‑Fi architecture, the communication board integrates a 32‑bit processor, onboard TCP/IP protocol stack, real‑time clock, and crypto accelerator. Supported network protocols include DHCP, UDP, DNS, ARP, ICMP, HTTP client, FTP client, and TCP, enabling direct internet or local network communication without requiring heavy processing from the host controller. This embedded networking capability simplifies firmware development and shortens deployment time for IoT gateways, wireless monitoring equipment, and connected embedded applications.
Low‑Power Wireless Serial Interface
This serial Wi‑Fi module connects through a TTL UART interface, supporting host data rates up to 464 Kbps while maintaining efficient energy consumption. Power management features enable ultra‑low sleep current as low as 4 µA and typical active current around 38 mA. Additional onboard resources such as eight digital I/O pins and three analog inputs allow the wireless module to directly interface with sensors or control signals, supporting compact wireless sensing or remote monitoring solutions.
WiFi Bee V1.0 serves as a practical wireless upgrade for robotics controllers, distributed sensor networks, and embedded development platforms requiring straightforward Wi‑Fi connectivity. The compact XBee‑style Wi‑Fi communication board enables rapid integration into prototyping environments, remote monitoring systems, and connected electronics used in education, research, and IoT experimentation.
