SELECTION GUIDE

How to Choose the Right ORP Sensor: From Maker Projects to Industrial IoT

DFRobot Apr 08 2026 13

In the field of water quality monitoring, ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) is a crucial indicator measuring the ability of an aqueous solution to oxidize or reduce. To meet diverse needs ranging from maker education and prototyping to Industrial IoT (IIoT), this guide compares three different tiers of our ORP sensors to help you make an accurate and informed decision.

2. Detailed Product Analysis & Scenarios

  • 1. Gravity: Analog ORP Sensor Meter for Arduino
    🥇 [Entry-Level & Lab Preferred]

Gravity: Analog ORP Sensor Meter for Arduino

    SKU: SEN0165

    $89.00
  • This is the most fundamental analog ORP sensor, designed specifically for Arduino. It is highly compact and allows you to accurately monitor ORP with simple wiring and programming, without adding complex additional circuitry.

Target Users: Students, makers, and hobbyists in chemistry or hydroponics.

    Key Advantages:

    • Most Affordable.
    • Equipped with a "Zero calibration button" and power indicator LED for easy debugging.

Typical Applications: General water quality testing, lab chemistry experiments, hydroponic gardening water sampling.

Selection Advice: If your project is a Proof of Concept (PoC) or only requires intermittent/occasional water testing on a tight budget, this is your best choice.

An upgraded version of the entry-level sensor, the Pro version features significant optimizations in hardware materials and signal circuitry.

Target Users: Advanced makers and prototype developers needing long-running water quality monitoring equipment.

    Key Advantages:

    • Supports 24-hour Online Monitoring: Employs a platinum indicator electrode and silver-silver chloride reference electrode, greatly enhancing product durability and lifespan.
    • Enhanced Data Stability: The new signal converter adds a stable voltage reference, making readings immune to supply voltage fluctuations.
    • Comprehensive Accessories: Includes waterproof aviation cable connectors and cable glands to help conveniently build a waterproof ORP monitoring system.

Typical Applications: Small-scale aquaculture online monitoring, long-term fish tank/swimming pool monitoring prototypes.

Selection Advice: If you still want to develop using Arduino (Analog pins) but require a sensor that can operate stably underwater 24/7, choose this one.

This is a true industrial-grade sensor, completely stepping away from the "dev board" form factor. It is engineered for demanding environments and standardized industrial networks.

Target Users: System integrators, industrial automation engineers, IoT solution providers.

    Key Advantages:

    • Exceptional Reliability & Accuracy: Extremely fast response (<1s), high accuracy (±5mV), and features a built-in temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation (lacking in the previous two models).
    • True Industrial Protection: IP68 waterproof rating with an integrated housing design and a 5-meter cable, rated for continuous underwater operation.
    • Standardized Communication: Features an RS485 interface utilizing the standard ModBus-RTU protocol and 10~30V wide voltage input, making it seamless to integrate into PLCs or industrial IoT networks like LoRaWAN.

Typical Applications: Wastewater and effluent treatment plants, automated swimming pool disinfection monitoring, commercial aquaculture management, environmental monitoring systems.

Selection Advice: If your project faces harsh outdoor/industrial environments, or if your main control system uses PLCs/Industrial Gateways rather than a simple Arduino, choose this one without hesitation.

💡 Important Maintenance Note (Applicable to all ORP probes)

The protective cap of all the probes mentioned above contains a specialized preservation liquid (3.3mol/L KCl). Even when sealed tightly, minor seepage around the cap may occur during shipping or use, resulting in the formation of white crystalline deposits. This is a normal physical phenomenon indicating that the probe is well-preserved and will NOT affect the sensor's lifespan or accuracy. You can simply dissolve the white crystals back into the protective liquid within the cap. Please use it with confidence.
