Temperature range of Laser Photoelectric Switch

I'm using a pair of the laser photoelectric switches to protect a rolling roof against collisions with obstacles (specifically, telescopes in my observatory). They're working brilliantly and I'm very happy with them. You can see the set up in the last few photos on the observatory website: http://www.clearanddark.com/LeBourdieuObservatory/

One of the pictures shows the exact setup of the two lasers, mounted in 3d-printed housings: http://www.clearanddark.com/LeBourdieuO ... e-177.html

Tonight the temperature dropped quite low for the first time while they were operating (they're only on when the roof moves). It was about 5 deg C. I noticed that the outer one, the one more exposed, was notably dimmer than the other and even flickered off for a few seconds.

What is the allowed temperature range? I'm expecting the tempertures outside to get to maybe -10C worst case. And maybe +45C in the summer, also worst case.

If the temperature range is a limiting factor, do you have any experience of heating them? I was thinking of a small low-powered heating foil (maybe 3-5 W) with a thermistor-controlled PWM drive to regulate the temperature. Of course it would be not so easy to correctly apply it to the laser device so that the heat goes to the right place.

Any thoughts?

thanks,
Richard

How is it going?

I got news from the supplier that the working tempreture is: -20 - 80℃, degrees Celsius, so according to your info 5 deg C, it should be no problem. Is it possible that because the light intensity of outside made the outer one looks dimmer? Can it work well?

2016-02-06 19:29:32 Hello and welcome to the forum, what an impressive setup you have! Thank you for the detailed information.

We're currently trying to contact the supplier to see if we can get more information about this component related to your query. Unfortunately as it's Chinese New Year right now people are away on vacation and not so easy to pin down, so a response might be delayed. We are sorry about this.

If it is indeed an operating temperature issue, your heating foil sounds like an ideal solution.

We will let you know in this thread when we have more information! Keep me updated on your end too if you manage to solve the problem.
