Sorry we don't quite understand what you mean by broken string. Are you unable to get a complete data frame?

I keep getting -1 as a response... cables are ok and I tried with 2 different boards... any idea how to fixit?

Hi doug and Lorn,
Sorry to know about your inconveniences. We just tested on raspberry pi 4. It works fine. Few things to pay attention to:
1. Make sure you are using 5v to power the sensor.
2. Make sure, you use the default distance (if you find the performance isn't good), all the functions are enabled and setsleep is disabled or set to very low value.
