SEN0232 Signal Output and Sample Rate

I have a question about the SEN0232 output.  The specifications indicate a frequency response of 31.5 Hz to 8.5 kHz and a “time characteristic” of 125 ms.  The definition of time characteristic is not clear - it implies a response time of 8 Hz which makes no sense given the frequency response of the microphone sensor.  It is not clear if your circuit is sampling at some rate greater than 17 kHz (converting analog to digital) and then converting back to an analog output every 125ms?  If so, does it average all the samples acquired at the 17+ kHz sample rate over the 125ms time period or does it convert a maximum value?

Thanks in advance.

OK, but that's not the question.  I understand the range of frequency response.  The question is about how this circuit defines the 125ms time characteristic value.

This is the range of audio frequencies that the microphone + analog front-end can respond to accurately. Below 31.5 Hz and above 8.5 kHz, the output will not represent sound levels reliably.
